A Startup Born on Twitter: Paper?d Is Custom Art for Your iPhone [PICS]

A new lifestyle-inspired iOS wallpaper app, Paper?d, is available Monday, offering free, professionally designed wallpapers based on everything from pop culture to worldwide travel.

The app was created by two best friends Jamie Varon and Nicole Antoinette. You may remember Varon from 2009 when she created the website TwitterShouldHireMe.com. The site got a ton of attention, which ultimately led her to create the high-end boutique web design company Shatterboxx in April of that year.

A few months after creating Shatterboxx she stumbled upon now business-partner Antoinette?s blog, reached out to her on Twitter, and the two became friends. Fast forward to December 2009, the Twitter buddies finally met in San Francisco, decided to move in together 24 hours later, and within a few weeks Antoinette became the other half of the Shatterboxx team.

Shatterboxx has done design work for a number of popular blogs including TheBloggess and Rocket Shoes, but this is its first introduction into the app world.

?I always wanted to change the wallpaper on my phone. I would look all over the Internet for options, and they were all on websites. That?s so inefficient,? Varon told Mashable. She found that most wallpaper options were also just curated pictures from the web. ?None of it meets the quality of what I?d want to put on my phone,? she said.

The project started out as creating wallpapers for her personal use that she would also share with friends. When her friends started emailing her asking for new wallpapers, Varon realized that there might be a larger market for the designs.

New iPad: Progress seems to be just evolutionary rather than revolutionary

Hemantha Abeywardena writes from London?

Apple has introduced its latest tablet on March 7 and most of the features in it had been predicted accurately by Apple watchers in the run up to the launch, apart from its name ? New iPad.

Much to our surprise, Apple did not number the device as iPad 3, as the previous model, introduced by late Steve Jobs, was called iPad 2. Apple defended the naming convention by getting our attention on existing Apple products: iMac, iPod ? and now, New iPad; it is true that they were not branded as iMac 1, iPod 2 etc. However, there is a bit of inconsistency, at least, in one Apple product ? iPhone: the range goes on as iPhone 3G; iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, highlighted the main features of the new tablet at an event in San Francisco on Wednesday. He brought our focus on new Retina Display: a screen which consists of staggering 3.1 million pixels or a screen resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels ? far higher than what our High Definition TV(HDTV) got at present. In short, its resolution is almost as twice as that of its predecessor, iPad 2.

With this resolution, the picture quality on new iPad will be breathtakingly sharp and Apple is quite right to boast about the achievement; the image quality will be as clear as that of a glossy photograph - without the ghostly background of a pixel mine field, something you tend to see when you inadvertently keep your eyes too close to the screen.

The processor of the new iPad has been upgraded to an A5X. While the CPU remains dual-core, the graphics processor has been beefed up to quad-core. The upgrade of the graphic processor reflects the insatiable need of power of that particular component, especially, in the presence of the highly-saturated pixel distribution on the screen.

The internal storage of new iPad ranges from 16 GB to 64 GB, of course, in proportion to the corresponding price tag of the device ? between $500 and $830. Unfortunately, Apple has not shed not any light on the size of the RAM, which, in turn compelled industry watchers to guess its value as 1GB.

There is a more powerful rear camera in new iPad ? iSight: it can record HD video; it has the face detection capability too with what Apple called, advanced optics. Since Apple devices can easily be synchronized with its own cloud services, iCloud, the issue of storage large video files does not arise as long as you have the access to a faster Wi-Fi service.

The new iPad is designed to work with the latest faster mobile networks ? up to 4G LTE(Long Term Evolution) in the US and Canada and of course, our usual Wi-fi networks. However, since 4G LTE is still in infancy in the rest of the world, even in the UK, we won?t be able to use those powerful networks up until next year.

The new features, no matter how impressive they are, come at a price ? the need of energy to power them. So, a little compensation has been made in terms of the weight and thickness of the new iPad ? slightly heavier and fatter ? to accommodate a more powerful, larger battery, which, according to Apple, guarantees a 10-hour viewing time with a single charging.
Despite the much-hyped hullaballoo, generally speaking, the update has been just evolutionary. It is not a revolutionary step forward at all. Apple says it is a ?resolutionary? product while cashing in on its Retina Display.

The linear progress of the tablet ? from iPad 2 to new iPad ? is not impressive enough to lure iPad 2 users to the new device by instigating a stampede to sell the existing ones on eBay at a discount price.

As far as millions of Apple loyalists are concerned, the failure of the technical giant to come up with a revolutionary device is a lingering worry, especially in the absence of a visionary of its legendary co-founder, late Steve Jobs? calibre.

Of course, Apple still has the same brilliant team that Mr Jobs used to work with. However, the way the emergence of new device disappointed a significant segment of Apple fans who love meaningful innovation, clearly shows that the vacuum left behind by Mr Jobs is yet to be filled at the helm of the company, if it does not want to suffer from post-Bill-Gates Microsoft problem in the long run.

Apple, which became the largest company in the United States recently while making it larger than the economies of Saudi Arabia, Belgium and even Poland, is lucky for not having a robust competitor at present, apart from a bunch of copycats which just try to imitate its products ? and then sell them at lower prices.

However, Apple cannot afford to be complacent while enjoying the current predicament of its rivals for very long, as the threat for its dominance can emerge from elsewhere ? and out of the blue. The history of technology is awash with a long list of pleasant surprises.

50Plus : Arts & Entertainment : Monsieur Lazhar wins big at the 32nd ...

Canadian film celebrates the best of the year at The Genie Awards

Quebec film Monseiur Lazhar won big at the 32nd Annual Genie Awards held in Toronto last night. The film was recently up for Best Foriegn Language film at the Oscars, but lost to Iranian film A?Separation.

Up for nine awards at the ceremony, they took home six ? Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing.

The critically acclaimed dramedy tells the story of an Algerian immigrant in Quebec, who lands a teaching job at an elementary school after a tragedy occurs.

The film?s director,?Philippe?Falardeau, made a joke about losing the Oscar during his acceptance speech, saying, ?I wrote a speech two weeks ago and didn?t have the chance to say it. I?m tempted to recycle the first phrase: I?d like to thank the members of the academy ? of Canadian television and cinema. Honestly, I?m privileged to live in a time and place where our public system makes it possible for us to make personal films. It?s a choice we make as a society. Cinema is like the memory and the imagination of a country. So, without that, a country would not be a nation,? he continued.

He also offered some?advice?to filmmakers in Canada, ?I would like to share this with all my fellow filmmakers across Canada who are struggling to make personal films. I want to say to them: Be persistent. Be wild. Be bold. Be a little delinquent. Take risks, and something good is bound to happen.?

The intimate low budget film beat out star studded films like David Cronenberg?s A Dangerous Method and Jean Marc Valle?s Cafe du Flore for most of the top prizes.

The Best Picture win was the second win in a row for Quebec producers Luc Dery and Kim McCraw, who also produced last year?s big winner Incedies.

Quebec?s cinema seems to have a stronghold on the Canadian film industry, but when asked about this backstage, Falardeau downplayed the importance of location. ?I don?t keep marks of ?Oh, yeah, Quebec one year, Quebec the other year.? It?s just films and I think the films that are winning are worth seeing. And I would have liked to have said to the Canadian public: Go see them, not because they?re Canadian films, because they?re good films.?

A sweet moment of the night came when 11 year old Sophie Nelisse won Best Supporting Actress for her part in the film, as Monsieur Lazhar?s very grown up and articulate student.

Backstage she told the media, ?When I was on the stage over there I was really stressed because I didn?t think I was going to win.?

The other big moment came from A Dangerous Method star Viggo Mortensen, who won Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Sigmund Freud in the film. During his acceptance speech he proudly displayed his hockey fanaticism, pulling out a Montreal Canadians flag onstage.

Qwilt Unveils Unified, Transparent Caching Solution for Online-Video

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., March 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?Qwilt Inc., a provider of pioneering video-infrastructure products that are enabling the online-entertainment revolution, today announced the release of its QB-Series transparent-video delivery solution, a transformative product that gives carriers unprecedented and cost-efficient control over Internet-video traffic on their networks.

(Logo:? http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20111020/SF89908LOGO)

The QB-Series product packs the ability to identify, monitor, store and deliver video content on fixed or mobile networks onto a single platform, as opposed to the more-cumbersome, "bolted-together" solutions on the market today. The solution is sorely needed as carriers search for new technologies to handle a surge in online-video traffic over their networks; video is surpassing 50% of downstream Internet traffic in some markets.

More important, the performance of Qwilt's integrated solution is significantly faster than solutions that combine multiple products.? Qwilt testing reveals a performance gain of at least?5x over such competing products.

Qwilt's technology uses patented, video-content classification and analysis technology to accurately and transparently detect video content in an operator's Internet-traffic stream. Then, it adds optimized storage and delivery capabilities to create a unified appliance offering carrier-grade performance, scalability and reliability. The product is essentially a plug-and-play device that can be dropped easily into existing networks without requiring any infrastructure changes.

"More than 50 carriers worldwide with whom we are engaged are telling us that existing solutions to the online-video challenge are hard to deploy and use, and they don't scale well as the network grows," said Alon Maor, Qwilt CEO. "Qwilt, on the other hand, took a blank-slate approach, so we were able to design a new, single-platform solution that is significantly faster and more powerful than competitors'."

"We have identified an urgent need in Japan for a solution to ever-growing Internet video traffic and its associated costs for network operators. After working with many members of the Qwilt team for over a decade, we are pleased to be partnering with them yet again and believe the company and its products will have a major impact on network operators worldwide," said Masashi Ono, Division General Manager of IT Frontier?Corporation, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation in Japan.

Specific benefits of Qwilt's solution include:

• Reduced infrastructure costs. Using the Qwilt QB-Series product can reduce carriers' video traffic demands by 60-80%. With video approaching 50% of downstream traffic in some markets, this translates into a significant reduction in bandwidth demands and overall costs, reducing the need for infrastructure upgrades to support growing video delivery.
• Better network visibility and control. Today carriers have no insight into how over-the-top (OTT) video is traversing their networks, or the delivery costs it incurs. The QB-Series is the only offline solution that delivers insight into video-traffic characteristics and the ability to control delivery of that video for optimal performance.
• Dynamic adjustments to network change. By continuously analyzing and monitoring network traffic for new video sites and traffic patterns, and implementing delivery actions based on that insight, Qwilt helps carrier networks adjust in real time to changing network dynamics. As the market continues to grow and change, this agility will be essential for carriers.
• Improved Subscriber Quality of Experience (QoE). As subscriber retention becomes critical for operator bottom lines, protecting the subscriber experience becomes that much more important. By using in-network video delivery, Qwilt helps carriers improve the QoE for video and ensures an unparalleled online-viewing experience.
• New Monetization Avenues. By partnering with third-party CDNs Qwilt helps operators monetize delivery of over-the-top (OTT) video traffic while enhancing service levels to the consumers.

Qwilt's technology could help many carriers struggling with an upswing in high-quality, video traffic, says Aditya Kishore, a senior analyst with Heavy Reading who recently authored a whitepaper about video-optimized caching. "Simply expanding capacity as traffic grows exponentially is not sustainable without a clear, resultant revenue stream?and in competitive markets, that may not be a realistic expectation," he wrote in the report.

Qwilt will provide comprehensive demonstrations of the QB-Series Transparent Video Delivery solution at CableLabs' Winter Conference 2012 to be held in Philadelphia March 11 -13.

About Qwilt

Qwilt develops pioneering video technology that helps carriers identify, monitor, store and deliver high-quality, Internet video through one cost-effective platform. Qwilt's solutions enable carriers to better monetize Internet video and let consumers see the online entertainment they want in the highest possible quality. The company, based in Redwood Shores, Calif., is founded and staffed by veterans from Cisco and Juniper and backed by leading investors including Accel Partners, Redpoint Ventures and Crescent Point Group. Lockheed's Space Fence Prototype Starts Tracking Space Junk With Advanced Radar [Space]

Orbital debris is a large and growing problem, and no one is quite sure how to deal with it - polar lasers, nets and other concepts are still merely ideas. But we should at least monitor all that space trash, to be certain where it is and whether it's heading for something we want to protect, like the ISS or a military satellite. The Air Force's new Space Fence, designed to keep an eye on space trash, is getting closer to reality. More »
